We’ve noticed a trend towards phthalate free products recently and were wondering what all the fuss is about. Turns out, these chemicals are in pretty much everything we consume, eat, or use throughout the day. Here’s some more info for those of you who’ve also been curious about what’s going on with these.
What are phthalates?
More commonly referred to as Plasticizers, Phthalates are a group of chemicals commonly used in a wide variety of products. Their purpose is to make plastics more flexible while additionally making them harder to break.
What can phthalates do to you?
Phthalates in low levels have not been proven to affect humans in negative ways. Although there has been concern over whether or not they may affect the reproductive system. The good news is that our body easily disposes of these metabolites through our urine.
How can we avoid phthalates?
Unfortunately, phthalates are nearly impossible to avoid as they are able to pass through the air as dust particles, which we than inhale. There are several other ways we are exposed to phthalates on a daily basis. Many products include plasticizers. They can be found in children’s’ toys, sheets, household cleaning and hygiene products, even food containers and water!
It seems that phthalates are a part of all our daily lives. It could never hurt though to seek out products that are phthalate free to keep the level of plasterers in our bodies at a lower level. Women are found to have higher levels of the chemicals presence in their bodies due to the cosmetic and hygiene products they use so frequently, so using phthalate free products could make a larger difference in reducing their levels.
