This is the second of two posts by Cassandra Tyra Rose. The first outlined the safety of essential oil use on newborns. Below are some suggestions for blends and oils to use for different annoyances common during the infant period. The suggestions below are meant to be complementary therapies and are in no way a substitute for seeking a medical diagnosis and treatment.
Lavender and Eucalyptus Radiata.
Diffuse 20 to 30 minutes twice per day or as needed.
Lavender can be diluted 1:1; apply to the affected areas of the skin and avoid eyes and mouth.
When an infant has episodes of crying and irritability with what appears to be abdominal pain. Nursing mothers should examine their diet for caffeine and food with high fat content and spicy foods.
Roman chamomile. Place one drop in a bowl of warm water and come compress on a baby's belly.
Dill. Place one drop in 1 tablespoon of sweet almond oil and rub on the middle of the babies back in Circular clockwise motions.
Congestion: Eucalyptus Globulus eucalyptus radiator and Rosemary. Diffuse all to decongest.
Constipation: Peppermint. I load one or two drops and apply to the abdomen and robin circular clockwise motions. Final. Apply need to bottom of the feet in the center and the heel area.
Coughing, Respiratory issues:
Lemon oil. Diffuse several drops of either or both about 15 to 20 minutes in the bedroom before bedtime.
Calming oils like a blend of Tangerine, Orange, Patchouli, Blue tansy, Ylang Ylang on the feet and back of neck. Also have the baby smell the oil from mom and dad's hands. Have the baby smell the Lavender oil from the adults hands.
Avoid commercial products that contain irritants such as talc and mineral oil. A blend of Geranium, Rosewood, Coriander, Palmarosa, lavender, Ylang Ylang , Roman chamomile, lemon, Jasmine, Rose diluted down 1:30 with almond oil and apply on location.
Peppermint dilute 1:1 and apply to the naval.
Lavender. Apply one or two drops to bottom of the feet.
Sleeplessness: Individual or blend of Tangerine, orange, patchouli, blue tansy, Ylang Ylang. Dilute 1:2 and apply on soles of feet at nap time or bedtime. Also can diffuse 20 to 30 minutes in the bedroom before bed.
Lavender. Same application as above and apply a few drops on the pillow or put in bathwater
Clove. Dilute 1:5, with olive oil and apply on babies gums and tooth area.
Umbilical cord healing:
Myrrh. Dilute 1:10 with the carrier oil and apply to the end of the umbilical cord for better healing.
Frankincense. Apply 1 to 2 drops per day directly on the umbilical cord stump until it falls off. Generally in one week.
Geranium. Apply 1 to 2 drops for any bleeding around the umbilical cord and bellybutton. This may be diluted.
